Study: LatAm Mobile Telephony Penetration Reaches 70%

Mobile telephony penetration in Latin America has reached 70% with Colombia leading the ranking with 90%, Argentine newspaper La Nación reported citing a recent study by consultancy Latin Panel.

Venezuela is in the second place with 89% telephony penetration, followed by Chile (87%) and Bolivia (82%). Argentina has a level of penetration of 63%.

"Although there are more mobile lines than fixed lines in the region there are still more homes with a fixed line telephone," the newspaper quoted Latin Panel commercial development director Mariana Rossi as saying.

The study also states that nearly 30% of the Latin American population has a PC. This ranking is led by Costa Rica with 66% of PC adoption, followed by Ecuador (54%), Chile (52%), Argentina (32.6%) and Colombia (31%).

The study differs from report published by 3G Americas on the first half of 2006 which placed Chile with the highest level of mobile phone penetration in Latin America with 74%, followed by Argentina with 68%, Colombia (66%), Venezuela (59%), Brazil (51%) and Mexico (47%).
