MOSCOW, July 25 (Prime-Tass) -- Russian CDMA mobile operator Sky Link plans to purchase equipment for test and commercial zones of the third generation (3G) mobile services from the U.S.' Lucent Technologies, Sky Link's General Director Alexander Nesterov told a conference call Tuesday.
Sky Link also plans to purchase Kyocera's mobile handsets for test and commercial operations, Nesterov said, adding that the handsets would support both the company's current standard, IMT-MC-450, and CDMA-2000 1x EV-DO, which is currently being tested by the company.
The company said earlier that it planned to start test and commercial operations of the 3G standard in Moscow and St. Petersburg in September.
Sky Link is the only Russian operator that holds a license for testing 3G services.
Sky Link had 300,000 users as of February 1. Sky Link was set up in July 2003 to promote the IMT-MC-450 standard, or CDMA2000 for the 450MHz frequency band, in Russia. Sky Link operates in 20 Russian regions and has a license that covers 65 of Russia?s 88 regions where 104 million people, or 72% of Russia?s total population, reside.
