Lucent Inaugurates R&D Laboratory

US-based Lucent Technologies has inaugurated a new research and development (R&D) laboratory designed to develop software and security solutions in Brazil, local newspaper Gazeta Mercantil reported.

The new laboratory in the city of Campinas in São Paulo state is Lucent's third R&D center worldwide with others situated in the US and Germany. Lucent did not reveal the sum invested in the new laboratory.

The Campinas laboratory will customize Lucent's global security solutions for the local market and develop other solutions for the global market.

The laboratory already has one telecom operator client that uses Lucent's security services with another three companies currently testing the company's applications, Lucent's security consultancy manager in Brazil Paulo Perez said without providing further details.

Lucent has also formed a partnership with the state university of Campinas (Unicamp) for R&D in technology. The US company intends to establish other partnerships with institutions elsewhere in Brazil.
