Sonofon Switches to Own Fiber Network

Denmark's Sonofon says that it has acquired fiber cabling as a turnkey project from GlobalConnect and now has 4,000 km new fiber cabling available for customers. Since 1998, Sonofon has been using the Telia Denmark fiber network on a contract that expired on 1 July 2006. Sonofon's fiber network project started in 2005 as part of Telenor's acquisition of Cybercity.

"With our own fiber network, we will achieve significant savings since we are cutting the so-called ongoing costs of transmission. Then there are the savings achievable from switching Cybercity's customers from the TDC network to Sonofon's fiber network. All in all, we are expecting to make nine figure savings," says Jesper Hansen, VP Strategic Projects & New Markets, Sonofon.

The new fiber network will boost capacity on the Sonofon and Cybercity networks. This will provide space for even more mobile and broadband customers and will futurise the development of new products and services.

"Both Sonofon and Cybercity are reporting increasing customer numbers and customers are using their mobiles and broadband connections more. Our new fiber network will provide the capacity required to handle them. The network will support future requirements for convergence and provide the opportunity to develop exciting new mobile and broadband products and services for private and business customers," says Jesper Hansen."
