Cameraphone Photos Win Journalism Awards
A camera phone photo taken on the day of the London terrorist bombings last year has won the inaugural UK Citizen Journalism Awards. The awards, set up by Nokia and the UK Press Gazette, aim to highlight images shot by members of the public witnessing events.
The winning photograph, cropped to remove some of its most disturbing elements, provides a haunting image of the Tavistock Square bus bombing. The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous is donating the prizes - a Nokia N90 camera phone, a photo printer and a year's membership to Flickr Pro - to charities looking after victims of the bombings.
Second prize went to a shot of the Buncefield oil terminal fire taken by a passenger in a plane.
Ian Reeves, editor of Press Gazette, said "It's clear from the quality of the entries to these awards that citizen journalism, however you define it, is going to play an increasingly significant role in the industry."
Third prize also went to a photographer on the day of the London bombs, taking a camera photo of of bomb survivors filing out of a Tube tunnel, capturing some order among the chaos following the 7/7 terrorist attacks.
