Telmex Plans US$50mn Investment in Residential Segment

Published on:

The Peruvian unit of Mexico's Telmex expects to invest US$50mn to launch fixed wireless telephony services in the residential and SME segments in December, using 3.5GHz spectrum acquired in April.

"This band allows us to cover the smaller segments that we could not cover with our corporate network, which was designed for large companies," Telmex Peru president José Gandullia told press.

Telmex's pricing structure favors the delivery of corporate services as packages of 30 telephony lines, but by using WiMax technology residential and SME users will be able to acquire one or two lines, besides receiving internet and data transmission services.

The company's plan is to start in the districts of Puente Piedra, Ventanilla in the district of Callao and Ate near the capital Lima. In a second stage the service will expand to Cuzco, Cajamarca, Huancayo and Iquitos.

This project is part of the 20-year contract Telmex signed with the Peruvian government after winning a tender launched by private investment promotion agency ProInversión to provide fixed wireless local loop services in Lima and Callao.

Under the terms of this contract, Telmex is expected to install 7,000 telephony lines in 15 locations of Lima and Callao.
