Ericsson Wins Malaysian EDGE Contract
Malaysia's DiGi Telecommunications has awarded Ericsson a contract to expand its EDGE network and upgrade its core network nationwide covering all major cities and towns in the peninsula (except Klang Valley) as well as East Malaysia. Under the agreement, Ericsson will modernize DiGi's network by upgrading and optimizing some of the operator's GSM radio access equipment to EDGE, and replacing the remaining older equipment.
Ericsson will also upgrade and expand DiGi's core network giving the operator additional subscriber capacity. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2006, Ericsson will also provide DiGi with a comprehensive portfolio of telecom services in a turnkey project that covers network design, deployment, multi-vendor integration, tuning and optimizing services.
DiGi's Chief Technology Officer, Jon Eddy says: "We have a two-fold objective in our network expansion and upgrade - to significantly enhance our EDGE network quality and performance as well as to extend the reach of our EDGE services to more than 60 per cent of the country's population."
Ericsson says that it is the prime supplier of 70 of the 151 commercial EDGE networks installed worldwide."
