Bell Labs Licenses Indoor Coverage Technology

Ircona says that it has entered into an agreement with Lucent Technologies to license and develop technology created by Bell Labs, Lucent's R&D arm, which will dramatically improve the coverage of cellular networks inside buildings and in other areas that typically have poor reception.

Building on Bell Labs technology, Ircona's solution utilizes a building's existing IT infrastructure to cost-effectively deliver mobile phone coverage to even the most inaccessible areas. The solution provides the ability to remotely and dynamically manage network capacity while also retaining the ability to detect and diagnose coverage degradation as it happens.

"It is our belief that this technology advancement will dramatically increase the market for in-building solutions, a market which is worth over $700M today" said John Doody, Director Product Development, at Ircona.

Lucent also will provide Ircona with assistance to help them develop a solution that meets market needs for in-building cellular networking. Further details about new products being developed using this technology will be disclosed as they are made available."
