Cellphones Lead to Al-Zarqawi Hiding Place - Report
Published on:
In an interview, an Iraqi army colonel told CNN last week, that intelligence from tracking cellphone locations helped US armed forces find and kill the head of Al Quaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Colonel Dhiya Tamimi said he worked with USA military forces to monitor al-Zarqawi and his associates' cellphones, helping to lead to Wednesday night's airstrike on the outskirts of Bagdhad.
It was reported some time ago that Osama bin Laden ceased using satellite phones after they were traced and used to locate Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan - so it does seem strange that al-Zarqawi would have continued to use local cellphone services while presumably aware of how they could be traced.
The authorities also relied on intelligence from Iraqi civilians and information from al Zarqawi's terrorist network. Five others died in the airstrike, including Sheikh Abd-al-Rahman, al-Zarqawi's spiritual adviser."
