Ecuadorian Mobile Market Reaches US$1bn in 2005
Ecuadorian mobile operators billed US$1.01bn in 2005 and saw the number of users grow 76% compared to 2004, local newspaper El Comercio reported.
Porta, the local subsidiary of Mexican holding company América Móvil, recorded sales of US$618mn and a US$63mn profit, up 74% and 14% compared to 2004, respectively.
Movistar, owned by Spain's Telefónica Móviles saw sales grow 14% in 2005 compared to the previous year, to reach US$350mn, but profit went down by nearly US$13mn, according to the report.
Locally owned Alegro PCS, saw sales reach US$41mn in its third year of operations, with a net lost of US$58mn.
The Ecuadorian mobile market is expected to grow 10% during 2006 and 2007, the paper reported.
