Lucent Wins Brazilian CDMA Contract
Lucent Technologies has announced a new agreement with Brazil's Vivo to expand and enhance Vivo's 3G CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO digital network in Brazil. These enhancements will expand the coverage of Vivo's network and enable subscribers to access mobile voice and high-speed data services at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second in more areas in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
As part of the project, Lucent will provide mobile networking equipment, including Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) and Modular Cell 4.0 base stations, and VitalSuite Performance Management Software that monitors the performance of applications and network infrastructure equipment. Lucent Worldwide Services will provide deployment and maintenance services.
"Sao Paulo is a fast-growing market with significant population migration and new buildings under construction to support more businesses, and the other regions are growing too," said Jaime Serrano, Lucent's CALA sales director for Vivo/Telefonica Group. "To meet this growing demand and support customers on the go, Vivo will enhance its 3G network coverage and continue to provide the most advanced mobile voice and broadband data capabilities in those regions."
"In 2005, we achieved 100 percent coverage of Sao Paulo's cities," said Javier Rodriguez, vice president of technology and networks for Vivo. "This new project demonstrates our commitment to our customers, as we continue to make investments in new innovations and enhancements. Certainly, our partnership with Lucent has been important to helping us maintain market leadership."
