Huawei Making Headway in Handset Market

Chinese telephony equipment manufacturer Huawei is making serious headway in Venezuela's handset market, a source close to Venezuela's largest telco Cantv told BNamericas.

Cantv owns mobile operator Movilnet, Venezuela's second largest cellphone company.

"They are very aggressive. We're selling their terminals and the top-selling product last year was Huawei terminals," the source said.

Movilnet alone sold some 600,000 Huawei terminals in 2005, beating out all the established market players, the source added.

"They're inexpensive and they're good, and people appreciate that."

Movilnet has over 5 million users, while market leader Movistar, of the Telefónica Móviles group has over 6 million.
