Landlines Follow Where Cellular Leads

Cable & Wireless in The Cayman Islands as extended its landline network to an island that had uptill now only had cellular phone capabilities. The Cayman Islands' stronger network Cable & Wireless has completed a major programme of work in Little Cayman to improve communications for the island's residents and visitors. Prior to this project, north coast residents did not have Internet access or fixed line services and had to rely on cellular phones for communications.

The first fixed line customer was connected on 22 March. The company began its project to provide fixed line services in September 2004, but encountered a number of obstacles including faulty vehicles and Hurricane Ivan.

"We are committed to providing 360 degree communications for the residents of the Cayman Islands, no matter where in Cayman you choose to live," commented Ian Tibbetts, Chief Operating Officer at Cable & Wireless.

"For many of us in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, it is hard to imagine not having access to the Internet, therefore we are pleased to complete this work to give Little Cayman's residents the first-rate telecommunications that we all take for granted." Tibbetts added."
