Orbitel to Launch WiMax 3-play in 1H06

Colombian long-distance operator Orbitel is preparing to launch WiMax-based triple-play service during the first half of 2006, Orbitel communications director Luz Ochoa told BNamericas.

Initially the service will be offered in Colombia's major metropolitan areas, with a total of 15 cities expected to have the service by year-end, said Ochoa.

The WiMax technology will allow Orbitel to offer IP telephony, broadband and cable to customers within some 50km of each base station without having to install expensive copper, cable or fiber last-mile infrastructure.

Orbitel already has all the licenses required to provide both long distance and local telephony, as well as data services, said Ochoa, and thus the service is not expected to face any regulatory obstacles. In addition, in Colombia IP telephony is considered a value-added service rather than a telephony service, Ochoa said.

The Orbitel offering will allow all three possible combinations of telephone and PC calling.
