According to the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, a joint venture headed by NHK and five commercial broadcasters in Tokyo has agreed to construct a 600 meter high tower for terrestrial broadcasts of digital television to both conventional televisions, but also to digital TV enabled mobile phones. The completed structure would be the highlight of a massive commercial development around Oshiage Station in NorthEastern Tokyo and when completed will be the world tallest freestanding tower, beating the 553 meters tall CN Tower in Toronto, Canada.
The new tower, nicknamed Tokyo Tower 2, but more formally known as the Sumida Tower is due to be completed in 2010, just in time for the shut down of the existing analogue TV system.
The current Tokyo Tower (1) is 333 meters in height.
