Ericsson Gets HSDPA Order From KPN
STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Sweden's Ericsson Tuesday said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with KPN Mobile for the rollout of a high speed mobile broadband network based on HSDPA for both KPN and Telfor in the Netherlands.
Ericsson will be the sole supplier for the 3G radio access of these networks.
"The main reason for selecting Ericsson is that they will provide us with the capability to launch HSDPA technology before the end of this year," said Marco Visser, chief operating officer of KPN Mobile in the Netherlands.
Ericsson said that its HSDPA solution is offering bandwidth similar to ADSL and will enable peak download speeds of 14.4 megabytes per second.
The advanced technology offers operators more than double the system capacity of WCDMA and shortens response times for interactive services, improving the end user's experience when using broadband services.
With Ericsson's solution, operators can deploy HSDPA within their existing WCDMA frequency carrier and offer continuous HSDPA coverage throughout their entire networks, the company said.
PC cards are available today and handsets will be available later this year, Ericsson said.
