US CDMA mobile handset manufacturer Kyocera Wireless (KWC) plans to double its market share in Mexico to 40% with handsets that integrate global positioning systems and internet access, KWC's new Mexico manager Renata de la Vega Serratos was quoted as saying by local daily El Economista.
After the US, Mexico is the second most important market for KWC and represents 30% of sales in Latin America, de la Vega Serratos said.
Of Mexico's four mobile operators, two use CDMA technology, Iusacell and Unefon, both owned by media magnate Ricardo Salinas, with approximately 4,000 lines.
Iusacell provides GPS services over satellite with its Ubicacell offering while Unefon offers Ubicame with BREW technology.
De la Vega Serratos believes KWC can take market share from giants Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony Ericsson in Mexico with mobile phones with more advanced services.
KWC launched operations in Latin America in 2001 and currently has 25 operators as clients in 16 countries.
