EDGE Coverage Expanded in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's M-Tel says that it has increased the coverage of its EDGE network to 9 new cities. Starting from the end of December 2005, customers living in Kardzhali, Samokov, the Borovetz resort, Sandanski, Dimitrovgrad, Dupnitsa, Bankia, Radomir and Kiustendil are able to surf the Internet through their mobile phones with speeds up to three times faster than GPRS connection.

The EDGE network of M-Tel covers also Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas, the main resorts and settlements in the Black Sea region, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Blagoevgrad, Bansko, Pamporovo, Pernik, Petrich, Pazardzhik, Kazanlak and Smolian. At present time about 46% of Bulgaria's population is able to benefit from the advantages of EDGE services offered in Bulgaria only by Mobiltel.

"The policy of M-Tel is to be the leader of the mobile communications in Bulgaria by introducing high-end innovative technologies. We give our customers the opportunity to enjoy and use the challenges of the 3G services. Our goal is to present the EDGE technology in more and more settlements in Bulgaria in order to make the modern 3G technologies available for all of our customers", said Thomas Klemenschits, Mobiltel CTO.

The Mobile World database reports that M-Tel has just over 60% of the market share in Bulgaria. Rival operator, Globul has just under 40% with BTC holding onto somewhat less than 1% of the market."
