Indec: Mobile Base Grows 74.2% Yoy

Mobile operators in Argentina closed December 2005 with 22.1 million lines in service, up 74.2%, or 8.6 million lines, compared to the end of 2004, according to statistics bureau Indec.

Local consultancy Prince & Cooke recently reported nearly 20 million mobile lines in service at end 2005, lower than Indec's figure because the bureau does not eliminate accounts closed, those who migrate to GSM or lines that have not been in use for over eight months.

Mobile traffic was also up 68.9% year-on-year in December, according to Indec.

Local telephony traffic was down 0.8% in 2005 compared to the previous year, while domestic long distance calls rose 16.8%. Indec recorded 8.9 million fixed lines installed, an increase of 1.2% year-on-year.

The number of outgoing international long distance calls increased 22.1% compared to 2004, while the number of minutes rose 6.2%.
