Limited Resumption of Services in Nepal

Following last week's shut down of all mobile phones in Nepal, the state run operator, Nepal Telecom has been given permission to restart services for contract customers. PrePay customers however remain disconnected from the network. The country's second GSM operator, Mero mobile is still banned from providing any services.

Local reports suggest that United Telecom, which operates a local fixed wireless service has lost over US$180,000 since the shut down.

Asked when the government would allow resumption of the pre-paid and UTL phone services, government spokesperson and Minister of State for Information and Communication Shrish Shumsher Rana said they would also be opened "in due course of time"."
