Jumping From the Top of a Telecoms Tower

An Australian base jumper, Gary Cunningham rang in the New Year by "base jumping" from the top of the Menara Kuala Lumpur telecoms tower a total of 133 times in just 24 hours. The previous world record was 57 times in 24 hours. Base jumping is named for Building, Antenna, Span, Earth. Cunningham was supported by a team of 12 people who prepared his parachutes for the leaps from the 421 metre high telecoms and broadcast tower.

"We were in freefall as it ticked over to 2006. You could see the fireworks all over the city. It was amazing; a great way to end a long, hard day," he said.

The jumps occurred on average once per 10 minutes with only short breaks due to the weather. The Base jumps started at midnight on December 31st and concluded as the city celebrated the New Year.

The four tallest towers in the world are CN Tower in Canada at 553m, Ostankino Tower in Russia at 537m, Shanghai Tower in China at 468m followed by Menara Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia at 421m."
