3G Test Calls Made in Oman

The Oman based GSM network operator, Nawras has announced that a successful first 3G call was carried out on its mobile network. As part of winning the licence for the 2nd mobile operator in Oman in 2004, Nawras was also awarded a 3G license, and already operates an EDGE network. At the Nawras Board of Directors Meeting held yesterday, Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO of Qtel and Nawras Board Member, carried out the first 3G video call using a 3G enabled mobile handset and calling Sheikh Saif Al-Maskery, Nawras Chairman with a similar 3G phone.

Nawras is planning to activate 3G in the first quarter of 2006 by trialling third generation mobile services to a selected and limited number of customers.

Ericsson has been chosen as the supplier of the Nawras 3G network trial and has been working closely with Nawras to reach this important milestone."
