Altobridge Split-BSC Solution Cuts Remote GSM Costs
ip.access says that Altobridge, a developer of mobile systems for remote communications, is launching a low-cost satellite backhaul solution for the provision of remote cellular coverage using ip.access nanoBTS picocells. The new solution enables mobile network operators to serve small remote user groups of 100 subscribers with a single picocell, reducing operating costs to less than US$5 per subscriber per month and removing the need for expensive towers.
Its unique GSM architecture splits the Base Station Controller functionality between the remote user site and the core communications network, delivering a 75% overall bandwidth saving on backhaul for transport and signalling.
Mike Fitzgerald, CEO, Altobridge, commented, "We are pleased to work with ip.access to enable the provision of cost-effective cellular communications to remote subscribers across the globe. Following in the footsteps of the GSM Association's success in getting a sub 50 USD handset to market, we have now broken through the next key barrier and achieved a sub 5 USD per subscriber per month cost to service providers for low numbers of subscribers."
