3G Coverage for Salzburg

mobilkom austria has announced the launch of a full-coverage high-speed mobile network in Salzburg. Coverage for 98.22% of Salzburg's population will be achieved with the help of an intelligent combination of 3G transmission technologies UMTS and EDGE. The basis for the establishment of a full-coverage 3G network in Salzburg Province was the introduction of UMTS in the city of Salzburg. Special UMTS workshops were used to develop joint concepts and to harmonize UMTS planning by the various mobile operators. This allowed UMTS coverage for the city of Salzburg to be implemented using the lowest technically feasible level of transmitting power.

"Salzburg is an important business location," explains Dr. Boris Nemsic, CEO mobilkom austria and COO Wireless Telekom Austria, "and, as Austria's leader in innovations, we are also responsible for not just maintaining but expanding the competitive edge of Salzburg's businesses. Because mobility is the keyword for business, today and tomorrow. Two out of three company employees use laptops and more than a third need to have access to important data while on the go. In view of these figures it becomes clear that efficient work depends on the speed and accessibility of the data transmission technology used."

A1 UMTS+EDGE MOBILE: High-Speed for All of Salzburg

To allow use of 3G applications in areas where providing UMTS coverage would not make financial sense due to the low population density, mobilkom austria employs the complementary technology EDGE. This offers 3G speeds (up to 200 kbit/s) as well as a large cell radius, permitting rural areas to be covered as well. The intelligent combination of these two transmission technologies, A1 UMTS+EDGE, makes it possible to provide coverage to 97% of the Austrian population as a whole and 98.22% of Salzburg's population."
