Ericsson, TeliaSonera In Joint Trial Of UMA"

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Telefon AB LM Ericsson Wednesday said that together with Nordic operator TeliaSonera AB it will conduct a joint trial of Mobile@Home, Ericsson's solution for Unlicensed Mobile Access, or UMA, which permits the use of one single handset for both mobile and fixed telephony.

The company said the solution turns mobile phones into Internet Protocol, or IP, phones in the home, using the fixed broadband network to connect calls. As soon as the user leaves home, the phone automatically and seamlessly switches to the mobile network. Consumers can then benefit from the higher data speeds and better coverage at home, while maintaining the convenience of their mobile phones.

The solution is a completely converged mobile and IP-based telephony solution.

The trial with TeliaSonera will include technical tests of the Ericsson UMA system, connected to TeliaSonera's network in Sweden.

"We believe that the UMA concept will be an important part of our future offerings since UMA combines the flexibility of mobile service with the higher data speeds of broadband and the convenience of one handset," said Haakan Dahlstroem, group vice president Networks and Technology at TeliaSonera.
