Siemens Wins Thai GSM Contract
Thailand's largest mobile provider, Advanced Info Service (AIS), has contracted with Siemens to expand its GSM radio and core network. In the future, up to one million additional subscribers will be able to make phone calls and utilize mobile communication services over the AIS network.
In addition, Siemens will also be supplying a multi-service provisioning platform. This will ready the operator's network for data traffic, and thus represents the first step toward being able to offer such data services as Internet access or MMS. The framework contract additionally includes an agreement on network maintenance; it is valued at a total of US$52 million.
Siemens has been supplying AIS with GSM network infrastructure, such as switches, base stations, intelligent network services and applications, since 1995. Siemens currently holds a GSM market share of 25 percent in Thailand. AIS enjoys a market share of over 50%, and its 16 million subscribers presently make it Thailand's largest mobile operator. In expanding its GSM mobile network, Thailand's market leader is responding to the rapidly growing demand for mobile communication in the country."
