Ericsson Win Nigerian CDMA Contract

Fixed-line operator, Nigerian Telecommunications (Nitel), has awarded Ericsson a deal worth USD$46 million for the expansion of its fixed-wireless CDMA 2000 1X network. Under the terms of the contract, Ericsson will be supplying Nitel with the infrastructure and services it needs to expand its fixed-wireless network in the north-west and south-west regions of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Says Deputy general manager corporate communications Tayo Ekundayo at Nitel: "Nitel's mission is to provide telecommunication products and services that are efficient and affordable to meet the needs of our customers, with the goal of growing access to communications in Nigeria. Ericsson is the technology leader in the telecom market and understands operator's needs, and as such has offered us scalable and flexible solutions that we need to address high-growth markets."

Says Silvia Gold, Nitel key account manager at Ericsson: "Nitel and Ericsson have had a business relationship since 1990, when Ericsson was commissioned to supply Africa's first mobile telecommunication system. Furthermore, in 2001 Ericsson was contracted by Nitel to assist them with the expansion of their GSM network with a capacity for an extra 180,000 subscribers."
