FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- German technology company Siemens AG (SI) Tuesday said it will provide technology that allows faster Internet downloading to the German and Austrian wireless networks of T-Mobile International AG (TMO.YY).
T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT).
Siemens didn't disclose the value of the contract.
The High-Speed Downlink Packet Access technology, or HSDPA, enables large volumes of data to be transported significantly faster from the wireless network to the subscriber's device, said Siemens.
Beginning in spring 2006, HSDPA will enable T-Mobile customers in Germany to initially download data to their mobile devices at speeds of up to 1.8 megabits per second. The download rates will gradually increase, reaching 7.2 megabits per second in the future, exceeding the speed of wireline broadband links as with today's digital-subscriber-line technology, Siemens predicts.
Customers will benefit from "greater convenience and speed in all mobile applications such as surfing and chatting, sending e-mails or making large downloads from the Internet or an intranet", said T-Mobile Germany Chief Technology Officer Joachim Horn.
Since 2002, Siemens and its partner NEC Corp. (NIPNY) have been supplying base stations compatible with the new technology.
