Late Running New Zealanders Turn To SMS

Four out of five New Zealanders use SMS to say they are running late, according to an online survey completed by Xtra and HP Connected Lives. The research was carried out as part of the Xtra and HP Connected Lives programme where 25 households have been selected to take part in a four month programme to find out how New Zealanders use broadband and technology to enrich their lives.

The research of more than 800 people also highlighted that Kiwis are keen to be in to win, with 77% of respondents using text messaging to enter competitions. Television shows like NZ Idol and Dancing with the Stars have also made an impact on New Zealanders' texting habits with 41% of respondents using texts to vote.

Two out of five respondents confess to flirting via text. Contrary to popular belief, we've still got an old-fashioned streak when it comes to romance, with just two percent of respondents admitting to dumping someone by text.

"The research results are interesting and show that texting has definitely become part of the fabric of our day-to-day lives and how we communicate with each other. Kiwis are clearly content to let their thumbs do the talking!" said Chris Thompson, Head of Xtra.

The survey showed that one in three respondents use WAP access on their mobile phone to access information such as news, weather and sports results.

"More and more people are turning to mobile technology, such as texting, WAP, and mobile broadband because it makes life easier and it is just so convenient. Mobile technology now plays such a significant role in all facets of our lives whether it is for social reasons, finding out information or to enter competitions," said Mr Thompson."
