WCDMA and CDMA Drive Growth in Mobile Infrastructure

Published on:

In a newly released report, Dell'Oro Group forecasts that the mobility infrastructure equipment market will grow five percent in 2005 to US$39.1 billion. Growth will accelerate in 2006 with revenues from new 3G networks in the USA and anticipated new 3G investments in China. According to the report, much of the growth is expected to come from WCDMA and, to a lesser extent, CDMA-based systems.

Despite reaching a peak in 2005, sales of GSM-based equipment will continue to play a major role in infrastructure spending through 2009.

"While many developed countries are now migrating from GSM to WCDMA networks, developing regions in Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America are not currently considering migration or are only in the very early stages of migration planning," commented Greg Collins, Senior Director of Mobile Infrastructure Research at Dell'Oro Group. "However, since much of the subscriber growth is expected to come from existing GSM-based networks in these developing regions, the market for GSM-based equipment will continue to remain sizable."

According to the Dell'Oro Group report, subscribers of GSM-based services will increase from 1.3 billion in 2004 to 2 billion in 2008."
