Japan's DoCoMo is to start applying the same tariffs for both its 3G and 2G networks from this Novemeber. Currently, there are separate billing plans for mova (2G) and FOMA (3G) services. Under the new plans, DoCoMo will introduce a communications charge for every 30 seconds, unlike the current billing plans, which base charges on varying increments of time. In addition, the new plans charge a flat rate regardless of the time of the call, distance or the type of telephone the call is made to.
DoCoMo will also extend the "Ichinen Discount," which currently gives users a progressively bigger annual discount for the first five years culminating in a constant 15% discount after the 5th year. Under the new plan, the discount will increase for the first 10 years of use, culminating in a 25% discount after the 10th year. (Please see Attachment 2 for details.) Under the new plan, users can receive up to 50% off in combination with the Family Discount.
Existing users have the option of applying for the new plans or continuing their current plans. New users may apply for either the current or the new plans until October 31, after which new applications for the current 2G and 3G plans will no longer be accepted."
