Qualcomm Supporting I-mode In Its Chips

Qualcomm has announced that it will be added support for i-mode services onto its Mobile Station Modem chipset solutions, using the Access NetFront Mobile Client Suite. The i-mode solution will be built entirely on Qualcomm's Open BREWapi software. Support for the solution will initially be available on the MSM6250 chipset, part of Qualcomm's Multimedia Platform of single-chip solutions. Other chips in the Multimedia and Enhanced Multimedia Platforms are also planned to support i-mode. ACCESS' i-mode Global solution will be available directly from ACCESS to handset manufacturers.

"Enabling ACCESS' i-mode Global Profile solution for Qualcomm's popular MSM chipsets delivers a significant new opportunity for mobile device manufacturers to enter the i-mode market," said Toru Arakawa, president and chief executive officer of ACCESS. "We're pleased to collaborate with Qualcomm to support a rich, useful and consistent end-user experience for i-mode subscribers."

"We're excited to work with ACCESS to provide a solution that further advances the deployment and adoption of new 3G handsets and services, while maximizing the full benefits of our Launchpad multimedia suite," said Luis Pineda, senior vice president marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "This solution significantly streamlines development requirements for device manufacturers to greatly expand the worldwide availability of i-mode-based WCDMA handset models."
