T-Mobile To Offer High-Speed Internet To Cell Users
FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Deutsche Telekom AG's (DT) T-Mobile International AG (TMO.YY) will offer high-speed Internet access to private and business mobile phone customers in 2006, the company said Thursday.
First trials for the so-called High Speed Downlink Packet Access service, or HSDPA, for T-Mobile's Universal Mobile Telecommunications System network, or UMTS, will be launched in the fall, the company said.
HSDPA enables mobile phone users to download data at a rate of up to 1.8 megabits per second compared with the current 384 kilobits per second. The HSDPA connections speeds are comparable to those of fixed Digital Subscriber Lines, or DSL, broadband internet connections, the company said.
In the future, the HSDPA connection speeds will gradually be increased to up to 7.2 megabits per second, Deutsche Telekom said.
The new service will be launched at next year's technology exhibition CeBIT and will be available in all of T-Mobile's UMTS networks.
