The Maldives based GSM operator, Dhiraagu launched MMS on the island nation over the weekend. Dhiraagu activated MMS service for all our Post-Paid and Pre-Paid customers at the time of service launch without customers having to fill an application form or pay a setup fee. Customers with MMS-compatible handsets simply have to configure their phone and send one MMS to become a registered MMS customer.
As a special introductory offer, Dhiraagu will be offering the service free of charge during the first 2 weeks after launch.
After the special introductory period, customers will be charged for the MMS messages they send; the charge will vary depending on the size of the message. Detailed charges for MMS sending will be announced shortly.
In related news, Dhiraagu is to commence with the work to develop an international submarine cable for the Maldives. It is projected that the cable will be completed in 12 - 18 months. All international telecommunications in and out of the Maldives is currently carried over satellite and the introduction of a submarine cable will improve communications between Maldives and other international destinations."
