Rising Traffic and Expenditure Lead to Increased Use of Wireless Backhaul

The use of more voice and data minutes per subscriber along with initiatives by mobile carriers to reduce operating expenditures will lead to an increased use of wireless backhaul in the United States, a new Visant Strategies study finds.

While wireless backhaul now accounts for almost one-fifth of backhaul capacity in the United States, this will change during the decade, according to the findings in the just published study. Overall, the number of wireless backhaul links used in the United States will grow more than three-fold during the next five years, according to the report.

"As you see more and more operators building out 3G and 4G in the U.S., you are also seeing them build a greater need for backhaul services, and this will just continue as subscribers use more mobile minutes and data applications," said study author Dan Sweeney.

While vendors selling radios for wireless backhaul will realize a market significantly growing in dollar value by 2010, those selling other backhaul solutions will also benefit as carriers turn to a number of alternatives to reduce backhaul fees.

"Backhaul is the forgotten component of past and future mobile growth," said Visant Strategies Project Director Larry Swasey. "Increased mobile traffic has led operators to seek out less costly alternatives for backhaul as well as higher bandwidth in the link. This is not your father's backhaul anymore."
