Motorola Wins 3G Contract in Taiwan
Motorola has been chosen by VIBO Telecom of Taiwan for the large-scale island-wide deployment of its new UMTS network, including an upgrade to High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). VIBO plans to launch commercial UMTS service across Taiwan in Q4 2005.
Under a contract signed earlier this year Motorola will provide the UMTS Radio Access Network (UTRAN), comprehensive support services and mobile devices for greenfield-operator VIBO's 3G network, intended initially to support three million subscribers.
"Motorola's UMTS solution lets us rapidly introduce a powerful service offering while giving us a cost effective way to upgrade to HSDPA for even faster mobile broadband services in the future," said David Wang, general manager of VIBO Telecom, Inc. "As consumers seek an increasingly more captivating blend of services beyond games and ringtones into video streaming and new location-based services, Motorola's exceptional UMTS and HSDPA solutions will help us provide outstanding quality to the wireless subscribers of Taiwan."
