Telmex Opens $25 Million Global Service Center In Argentina
BUENOS AIRES -(Dow Jones)- Mexican phone operator Telefonos de Mexico SA (TMX) has opened a $25 million international customer service center in Argentina, adding to the $42 million network expansion it has already committed to invest in this country.
A Buenos Aires-based Telmex representative confirmed the investment figures and said the center was inaugurated Thursday. He said he was unable to provide further details.
According to media reports published Friday, the new center will cover post-sale service needs for Telmex's 1,200 largest contracts in the U.S. and Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico.
The Mexican phone company has extensive telecommunications infrastructure in Argentina, where it provides services to mostly corporate clients. In August, Telmex bought local data transmission and Internet service provider Metrored.
Telmex faces competition in the data services market from fixed-line heavyweights Telecom Argentina SA (TEO) and Spanish-owned Telefonica de Argentina SA (TAR). Telecom Argentina is investing $30 million this year to expand its network for digital subscriber line service.
