1 Million Roaming Handsets for Japan
Japan's KDDI Corp. says that it has shipped 1 million units of the au handsets that support international roaming service 'Global Passport', as of February 4. The service allows users to use 'Global Passport'- compliant handsets both at home and overseas, requiring neither application nor optional fees.
In April 2000, the companies became the first mobile carriers in Japan to offer an international roaming service which use the same system for both domestic and international roaming services. 'Global Passport' has been deployed in 15 countries and regions, including China, South Korea, the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia. These service areas account for 75% of the overseas destinations of the Japanese traveling abroad, according to the Ministry of Justice.
KDDI will continue to expand au mobile phone service areas overseas by partnering with CDMA mobile carriers in other countries."
