Nextel Added 955,000 Subscribers In 4Q, 2.9 Million For Year"

PHOENIX -(Dow Jones)- Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) said it added 955,000 subscriber in the fourth quarter, which includes 595,000 from Nextel and 360,000 from Boost Mobile, a Nextel brand targeting the teen market.

In a press release Tuesday, the company said it added 2.9 million subscribers during 2004, which includes 2.2 million from Nextel and 755,000 from Boost Mobile.

A year ago, Nextel added 553,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter and 2.3 million for the year.

The company ended 2004 with more than 16.2 million subscribers, including 15 million Nextel subscribers and 1.2 million Boost Mobile customers.

The company also said it recently completed a nationwide deployment of new voice coder software which will nearly double its cellular capacity.
