3G Trial Launch in Switzerland

Switzerland's sunrise says that it will launch its first UMTS service for selected business customers at the start of 2005. The service is designed as an extension to the existing sunrise GPRS mobile network and country-wide hotspots for sunrise public WLAN. The new year will also see targeted expansion of the sunrise UMTS network and the market launch of a new service for residential customers.

The sunrise UMTS network expansion is going according to plan. Based on a level of population coverage of currently around 60%, sunrise is introducing its first UMTS service for selected business customers in combination with a data card.

sunrise is convinced that the potential offered by Switzerland's extensive GPRS network is far from exhausted, and that the range of services waiting to be developed for both current and future requirements is still enormous. This is illustrated by the mobile portal, sunrise live, whose service offering is continually being expanded to better meet the needs of its ever-growing customer base. sunrise is therefore anticipating broader demand for UMTS services beginning in the second half of 2005."
