NEC to Use Ericsson's 3G Platform

NEC says that it has selected Ericsson Mobile Platforms for use in the launch of their next generation WCDMA/GPRS handsets. The first products to be made available within the 1st half of FY2005 (April 2005 - September 2005), will be based on the Ericsson U100 platform.

"NEC's choice of Ericsson Mobile Platforms as a partner for their global WCDMA/GPRS products is a strong endorsement of our technology and leadership in 3G," said Sandeep Chennakeshu, President of Ericsson Mobile Platforms.

"This is one of our important strategic moves for 3G," said Yoshiharu Tamura, Senior General Manager of NEC's Mobile Terminals Operations Unit. "With addition of Ericsson Mobile Platforms to our portfolio, NEC will be ready to offer a wider range of 3G mobile terminals to meet the various demands of 3G mobile operators and end users in a timely manner, in response to the wide variety of services and functions required, as the 3G market and services grow and expand globally."

The U100 has been launched in an estimated 30% of the world's WCDMA products."
