According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, mobility infrastructure revenues increased 33% in 4Q03 to US$8.9 billion, compared with 3Q03. Such strong growth in the fourth quarter propelled the market to finish 2003 down only slightly versus 2002 at US$28.7 billion. Contributing to the market's strength was a resurrection of Service Provider capital spending in the second half of the year, as well as a weakened US Dollar.
The WCDMA infrastructure market performed particularly well, growing 50% Q/Q to surpass US$1 billion for the first time.
"The market for WCDMA infrastructure equipment will continue to gain momentum as WCDMA services finally begin to roll-out on a more sustained basis in 2004," commented Greg Collins, Senior Director, Dell'Oro Group. "Moreover, the market for GSM/GPRS/EDGE equipment will remain relatively stable through 2004 as Service Providers, many of whom will ultimately transition to WCDMA, continue to invest in keeping their GSM-based infrastructure current, at least through 2004."
