Cingular Orders EDGE Test Kit

The USA based, Cingular Wireless has ordered test systems from Racal Instruments Wireless Solutions (RIWS) to enable rapid identification of network and terminal interoperability issues related to the EDGE network so that they can be resolved before they impact the quality of service provided to their customers. The Two-Way Air Interface Monitor is the only commercially available platform of its kind that provides complete access to all levels of the air interface protocol that controls the communications between a Base Station and a cellular device.

RIWS has also delivered a 6103 AMR Air Interface Monitor Emulator (AIME) system to Cingular to address the requirements of Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) in the GSM network. Cingular Wireless has laid down comprehensive AMR standards, over and above those specified by the PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB), that terminal manufacturers must satisfy prior to deployment on Cingular's networks. The 6103 AMR AIME is able to emulate a "Live" network and will allow Cingular to comprehensively verify the compliance of any manufacturer's mobile terminal to these standards prior to deployment on their network.

Amir Ghanouni, RIWS America's Business Director, believes that it is the company's ability to respond to unique customer requirements that secured the deal with Cingular Wireless. He commented, "Time to market is critical for all stakeholders, terminal and infrastructure manufacturers and network operators alike. Having a tool that can rapidly and accurately identify the source of any real or potential problems that might affect network performance or Quality of Service is critical to Cingular Wireless being able to roll-out its AMR and EDGE networks with confidence"."
