Siemens Wins Pakistani GSM Contract

Pakistan Telecom Mobile (Ufone), the mobile phone subsidiary of Pakistan Telecom (PTCL), has commissioned Siemens to expand its mobile network in Pakistan. Siemens Mobile is setting up a new GSM network infrastructure for Ufone in a total of 29 cities. The order is worth US$26 million.

Siemens mobile is delivering and installing new mobile transmission and reception equipment (base stations), switching technology, plus hardware and software components for the Ufone GSM 900 network in 29 cities. In four other cities, Siemens mobile is replacing the existing radio technology with Siemens base stations.

"With the Ufone order, we have achieved a further success as mobile infrastructure supplier in the very interesting Pakistan market, which in our view offers great potential. Currently only about three percent of the 148 million inhabitants use mobile telephony," said Christoph Caselitz, President of Networks within Siemens mobile. The rapidly growing demand for mobile services in Pakistan has induced Ufone to expand its GSM network rapidly, and we are proud that Ufone has selected us as sole supplier for the job."

The mobile provider Pakistan Telekom Mobile (PTML) is a 100% subsidiary of the state-owned telecommunications enterprise Pakistan Telecom Corporation Ltd. Since January 2001 - under the name Ufone - it has been offering mobile telephony services in Pakistan. Ufone currently has about 500,000 customers and a market share of about 20 percent."
