Vodafone Recycling Phones

To coincide with the Christmas season, Vodafone Portugal is launching a national programme to collect and recycle used mobile phones, offering new incentives for customers to dispose safely of their unwanted handsets. Under this programme, customers will benefit from a discount of US$12 on the purchase of a new phone when they trade in their old handset.

In addition, for each mobile phone recycled, Vodafone is donating 30 cents to the League for Nature Conservation (LNC). With the help of its customers, Vodafone will help the LNC, a not-for-profit organisation, to carry out conservation and research projects.

Vodafone was the first mobile telecoms operator in Portugal to implement a used handset collection programme on a national scale, in November 2001. All Vodafone Shops are equipped with a small 'bank' for depositing used mobile phones, batteries and accessories. The collected equipment is passed to a company that specialises in handling this type of material in complete safety.

Vodafone says that this initiative is a further step in the company's policy of raising public awareness about the importance of environmental conservation."
