InterWAVE Launches IP Based CDMA2000 Kit
interWAVE Communications has announced the launching of WAVE2000, the world's first internet protocol-based cellular infrastructure network solution utilizing CDMA2000. WAVE2000 transmits voice and data using Internet Protocol (IP) technology providing greater ease and flexibility than traditional telecom technologies. IP is evolving into the de facto standard for all telecom. This makes it easy for the product line to be either seamlessly integrated into an existing circuit switched public CDMA network or to be deployed as a stand alone network with interWAVE's IP based soft-switch. The introduction of the WAVE2000 product line significantly expands interWAVE's addressable market from its traditional GSM business into the CDMA space.
"With its local switching capability in the combined base station (BS) and base station controller (BSC) combined with the all IP long-distance back-haul, the WAVE2000 is an ideal low-cost network for seamless extension of existing public cellular networks and for local rural communities where long-distance back-haul costs otherwise become prohibitively expensive," said Lars Lindell, vice president and general manager for interWAVE's CDMA business unit. "With the WAVE2000, back-haul can even be extended via satellite into very hard to reach places. The WAVE2000 is also ideal as a metropolitan underlay system for hot spots such as airports, sports arenas and indoor environments relieving capacity demands on the macro overlay network."
interWAVE's WAVE2000 soft-switch is the central control entity of the company's CDMA2000 all-IP core network solution. It is based on next generation IP based soft-switch architecture and implements the traditional circuit-switched MSC and associated functionality in a scalable, distributed, and cost-effective fashion. WAVE2000's full complement of soft switch and media gateway family gives the operator the ability to scale its network and flexibly drop traffic into any gateway, or existing networks, whether it is PSTN, PLMN or VOIP network.
Erwin Leichtle, president and CEO of interWAVE, commented, "Innovation continues to be the hallmark of the interWAVE research and development team. Strategically, WAVE2000 allows us to expand our addressable market by adding the CDMA segment to our growing GSM business. As the Internet Protocol platform continues to become more widely adopted, interWAVE is dedicated to staking out a leadership position in this exciting market segment."
