Mobility Infrastructure Sales Up Slightly

According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, mobility infrastructure revenues increased 2% in 3Q03 to US$6.6 Billion, compared with 2Q03. Whilst this was a modest increase, it marks the second consecutive sequential quarter of positive growth and points to stabilization in the market going forward. In 3Q03, the markets for GSM- and CDMA-based infrastructure were both flat with the prior quarter, while the WCDMA market continued to experience volatility.

"While WCDMA revenues increased 32% during the quarter, results were impacted by continued price erosion. This was due to several factors: firstly, many base stations or Node Bs are shipping with a minimal configuration; secondly, there is an urgency to make WCDMA as economically viable as possible, therefore encouraging broader geographic deployment; lastly, increased competition within accounts is driving prices lower," said Greg Collins, Director, Dell'Oro Group. Recognized revenues for the quarter comprised sales of nearly 15 thousand Node Bs and associated Radio Network Controllers (RNCs), and Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs).
