Sanyo Selects Qualcomm for 3G Handsets
Qualcomm and Sanyo Electric have jointly announced the selection of Qualcomm's MSM6250 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset and system software for Sanyo's multimode 3G handsets. The announcement marks Sanyo's selection of its third WCDMA (UMTS) chipset solution from Qualcomm. With the MSM6250 chipset, Sanyo will provide cost-effective, feature-rich multimedia-enabled handsets to WCDMA (UMTS) markets worldwide using a proven solution that ensures faster time to market.
"The single-chip design of Qualcomm's MSM6250 chipset solution helps Sanyo address significant demand for full-featured, reliable handsets to support 3G launches worldwide," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. "Together, Qualcomm and Sanyo will provide smaller, attractive 3G wireless devices utilizing a common applications platform that simplifies development of multiple products for a variety of markets."
"Qualcomm is a recognized leader in chipset solutions for the WCDMA market," said Takenori Ugari, president of Sanyo's Consumer Group, Telecom Company. "With the selection of the MSM6250, we continue to work with Qualcomm to provide leadership in 3G worldwide with some of the world's most exciting wireless devices for consumers."
Building upon Qualcomm's previous WCDMA (UMTS) solutions, the MSM6250 chipset includes the fully integrated multimedia features of the Launchpad suite of applications. This single-chip solution eliminates the need for an external applications processor and associated memory, significantly reducing bill-of-material (BOM) costs, board size and power consumption."
